There are any number of twitter/facebook/social clients out there, both for the web and for your computer. If you’re on a Mac, Fluid can be used to bring those online clients onto your computer in some great ways.
Fluidize your Network
I don’t mean pour orange juice on your router. Fluid is a free application for the mac that takes websites and creates Site Specific Browsers (SSB) for them. That’s like a browser that just looks at one website. The SSB has several options your browser doesn’t
- Lets you make the website itself a stand alone application (This is good technical joojoo)
- You can set it as a Menu Bar Item (For fast access at any time)
- Set it as embedded Desktop item (So you can always see it)
- Or as a dock application (So it looks like any other app)
Drown Tweetie
There are many Twitter web apps out there like Seesmic or Threadsy that better left open. I always end up losing them in my tab forest that consists of hundreds of forgotten tabs.
My solution has been to create and SSB for them and stick em in my menu bar. I can hear the audio feedback when something had been updated and view it in menu bar no matter what application I’m in. No window or tab shuffling.

Threadsy operating out of my menu bar
Web apps in general have certain advantages:
- Make major updates more often.
- No incompatibilities or random crashes possible.
- GreaseMonkey augmentation (If your into that kinda thing.)
- Access from anywhere.
The list goes on, but you get the idea. Fluid works with any website, and it’s free. Check it out at fluidapp.com
**Seesmic has an Apple app, but I’m not a fan of AIR. Fluid is a good option to AIR, and my fish agree.
