The Tuts+ creative education network by Envato has added a new classroom, Creative Sessions. Built for beginners to professionals the site provides a well structured and surprisingly unique free learning experience.
The Tuts+ network is a education network by Australian based Envato. Over the last few years the network has grown to include everything from Photoshop, and Illustrator tutorials to Photography and Motion Graphics. The networks newest addition, Creative Sessions, is probably the most unique.
Instead of showing how one designer did something creative, each creative session attempts to bring readers through the concepts involved by showing a diverse range of approaches, and sharing the conceptual basics of a task rather then a strict work flow.
New 2-week creative session are posted monthly, Articles with in the session are added daily, giving time to absorb the knowledge and play with it. So every month you can check out new sessions that cover the concepts of things like Illustration, Typography, and Web Design in an easy to digest 10 article format.
When readers produce work they can attach copies to their comments with in the session and receive critiques from the sessions community. Since a project brief is suggested, critiques focus around a central goal, and feedback may be of more use then just “Judge my art”
Creative Sessions is a smart use of the existing Tuts+ network. Session articles are hosted on the Tuts+ site that most closely matches the sessions topic. This makes it navigation and discovery of related topics easy, so sessions aren’t isolated from inspiration. Sessions articles are centrally linked (aggregated) on the creative sessions site, organized by session topic. So you never get lost with in the session.
Nah, i wouldn’t go that far. While certainly helpful to students the entire Tuts+ network best serves as a low impact, continued education and inspiration for designers. The Creative Sessions is more suited to beginning artists then other Tuts+ sites but every artist can benefit from learning concepts from creative fields outside of their professional scope.
Sadly until the CIA perfects the intersect, there’s no substitute to a traditional learning environment and lots of experience.
Creative Sessions, and the Tuts+ network are free (for the most part).
A $5/mo Tuts+ membership entitles readers to freebie promotions, some great additional tutorials, and of course feeds the network to pay for new tutorials. The membership applies network wide.
