Googles political outlet CitizenTube sat down with FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski and did a quick Q&A about the FCC’s broadband plan. The video isn’t for geeks, it’s for average internet users. It clarifies the FCC’s overall stance on Americas future access to broadband internet.

One of the more important bits of government action that may take place this decade is the FCC’s plans for expanding affordable broadband to every American household. Don’t glaze at the subject this time, if you use the internet you should know get to know the FCC’s plans. Watch the video after the jump.

Essentially the FCC is equating the nations broadband infrastructure to that of telephones and electrical lines. Privately provided, but crucial enough to be government supported. Some of the things the plan hopes to do over the next decade is:

  • Encourage competition to lower prices and increase quality;
  • Fair advertising rules to stop internet providers from just advertising speed caps (like 1.5 mbs or 3mbs) when the average speed is significantly lower;
  • Continued net neutrality, which protects an equal playing field for big business, small business, and personal sites;
  • Extending high speed internet into minority and rural home as affordable rates and high speeds;
  • Fixing issues with national mobile phone connectivity;

That’s alot of goals, and even if only 50% of it actually happens, i’ll be happy. America finally has a plan. Better late then never.
